This year's industry report is here!

The background is the rapidly increasing number of electric cars on Swedish roads. The Swedish Traffic Analysis Agency recently published statistics showing that the number of rechargeable vehicles in traffic increased by 80 percent in 2020. An electric car must undergo a control inspection just like other vehicles – but despite the rapid increase in sales of rechargeable vehicles, there are still no special control points for electric cars. Components such as the car's propulsion battery, cables and charging equipment are therefore not checked for possible faults.

We also draw attention in the report to the major problems with road safety when it comes to heavy vehicles, such as trucks. As many as 45 percent of the trucks and truck trailers that are inspected are rejected. The heavy vehicles that operate on the roads are also not without criticism from other inspection bodies – when the Police and the Swedish Work Environment Authority recently carried out unannounced inspections of 340 heavy and light trucks, 300 safety deficiencies were found and seven out of ten inspected haulage companies had deficiencies.

At the same time, FBB can use new statistics to show that the inspection of nearly 20,000 heavy vehicles was postponed in 2020, due to an EU regulation that allowed postponed inspections due to the corona pandemic. According to the government, the temporary exemption from inspection was intended to be used by people in risk groups – but new figures now show that younger vehicle owners under 70, company-owned cars and heavy vehicles were overrepresented among those who postponed the inspection.

We also note in the report that the regulatory changes introduced in 2018 regarding environmental inspections seem to have had a lasting negative effect on the proportion of vehicles that are rejected due to environmental defects. The very sharp decline that the vehicle inspection industry was able to show in last year's report remains. In practice, this means that tens of thousands of vehicles that were previously rejected and remedied can now continue to operate on the roads and emit substances hazardous to health. The inspection regulations should therefore be adjusted immediately so that the environmental requirements set during inspections are tightened. The goal should be to be at the top in the EU rather than at the bottom.
