Car inspection industry proposes strengthened consumer protection
Every year, more than three and a half million vehicle inspections are carried out in Sweden. Vehicle inspections are of great importance for individual car owners to keep track of their car and know that they are driving safely, but also for protecting road safety and reducing the environmental and climate impact of road traffic. In a report released today, the Swedish car inspection industry association Swetic describes its view of how vehicle inspections contribute to achieving the ambitions in these three areas. In the report, Swetic also presents proposals for how the work with road safety, the environment and consumer protection can be further strengthened.
– With each passing year, cars become more and more advanced, making it increasingly difficult for the individual driver to detect faults in their vehicle. This reinforces the need for the independent expert control that inspection constitutes. Therefore, we propose a requirement for mandatory inspection when changing ownership of used cars, says Tord Fornander, Chairman of the industry organization Swetic.
In 2015, more than one and a half million cars changed hands. The vast majority of these, almost 1.2 million cars, were used. The vast majority of these changes of ownership occur between private individuals.
In the report, the industry association also proposes that the current intervals for control inspections should be maintained, something that most authorities, environmental organizations and road safety experts also recommend, as well as stricter environmental requirements and regulations for emissions. The rapid technological development of vehicles also requires that the regulations for vehicle inspections are updated and current, which requires cooperation between the industry and the authorities.
