FOS 2021-02: Height of handrails for escalators and moving ramps
Question: What is the minimum height of escalator/ramps handrails?
Answer: Answer: According to EN115-1:2017, the upper part of the handrail must be at least 0.9m and at most 1.1m high measured from the step nose, see 5.5.2.1 According to BBR (BFS2011:6 with amendments) point 8:2321 Handrails, the handrail height must be at least 1.1m if you can fall from a height of more than 3m and if an opening at the side of an outer edge of the handrail is greater than 0.4 metres in both longitudinal directions. In response to a direct question to the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning whether 8:2321 also applies to escalators/roller ramps, the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning has replied that stairs also mean escalators. According to the Guidance in SS-EN 115-1:2017, it is assumed that negotiations have been carried out for each agreement between the customer and the supplier/installer (see also Appendix A) regarding: a) intended use of the escalator or moving ramp, b) environmental conditions, c) installation problems, d) other aspects relating to the installation site.
